Ethanol is a colorless, volatile and flammable liquid with distinctive odor. It is the only type of alcohol used in alcoholic beverages. It is also used as a solvent. Its chemical formula is C2H6O and is also referred to as EtOH or C2H5OH. As the volume expansion is relatively uniform with increasing temperature, it is used as a thermometer fluid in thermometers (used in homes) that measure air temperature. A dye is added to see the liquid level easily. Its specific gravity is 0.789 g/cm3at 20 °C. Ethanol burns with a pale, bluish flame and without soot even when mixed with the same amount of water. The ignition energy of ethanol is 7.09 kcal per 1 gram. It is miscible with water, ether and acetone in all proportions. There is a decrease in volume when mixed with water. For example, when 52 volumes of alcohol and 48 volumes of water are mixed, it does not make 100 volumes of solution, but one with 96.3 volumes. It is the only type of alcohol used in alcoholic beverages..It is also used as a solvent in some vitamin syrups. Its chemical formula is C2H6O and is also referred to as EtOH or C2H5OH.
ETHYL ALCOHOL FERMENTATION
Fermentation is carried out by bacteria and certain species of yeast. After glucose brakedown, 1 CO2 is taken out of the obtained puryvate to form Acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde reacts with NADH2 and takes its Hydrogens. The final product is Ethyl Alcohol.
AREAS OF USAGE
It is mainly used in medicine, cosmetics, cleaning, plastic, printing and packaging industries, and in personal care products. It is also used as an intermediate in the production of other organic chemicals.
